World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) - An Opportunity for Communion of one Human Family?
Does the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) help create a communion of one human family on earth? What are the challenges and implications of the information society for Christian professionals and intellectuals?
The UN General Assembly in January 2002 decided to hold another global summit at Geneva from 10 to 12 December, 2003 and in Tunis in 2005. This time, the issue at stake is the information society, more specifically the role of the Information and Communication Technology and the digital gap. Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General said "This Global gathering will be a unique opportunity for all key players to develop a shared vision of ways to bridge the digital divide and create a truly global information society".
The WSIS Secretariat has published the first edition of the WSIS Newsletter which will be published approximately four times per year. The English version is available at: http://www.itu.int/wsis/news/news01.htm
French and Spanish versions of the newsletter will be available soon and can be accessed directly from the WSIS website:
French: http://www.itu.int/wsis/news/news02.htm
Spanish: http://www.itu.int/wsis/news/news03.htm
The inaugural issue includes articles on: the Coppet Workshop / Preparations for the Summit at the Executive Secretariat / Adoption of UNGA Resolution 56/183 / The UN ICT Task Force / UNESCO's NGO Consultations and the Summit and Porto Allegre
What are key issues at stake to be addressed from a Christian perspective? What and how could Catholic professionals and intellectuals contribute to the global reflection and debate on the information society? It will be one of the issues on agenda at the forthcoming International Council meeting to be held in Lima, Peru from July 11 to 12. Any suggestions on the ICMICA action will be very much appreciated.
