Presentation

    The Newman Association is a national organization whose members meet regularly in local “circles” to discuss and develop their understanding of the Christian faith. Most of us are (Roman) Catholic, but baptized Christians of other traditions are warmly welcome as Associate Members.

     The Association was founded in 1942, originally to answer the needs of Catholic graduates, but is now open to all Christians who seek to promote the aim of an educated laity. The Association takes its name from Cardinal John Henry Newman, who “wanted a laity, not arrogant, not rash in speech, not disputatious, but men who know their religion, who enter into it, who know just where they stand, who know what they hold and what they do not, who know their creed so well that they can give an account of it, who know so much of history that they can defend it. I want an intelligent, well-instructed laity…”. We hope that by promoting a reasoned expression of our faith and stimulating ‘action for change’, we can make an important contribution to the Church.

 Link with Cardinal Newman

The Newman Association’s link with Cardinal Newman is in sharing his desire for an instructed laity and in striving to be a means to that end. Our memorandum of association gives our main object as:

“To further the mission to the world of the Christian religion with particular reference to the Roman Catholic Church and in the light of the life and work of the Venerable John Henry Newman, by promoting greater understanding of the Christian faith and the application of its principles to the contemporary world.
In furtherance of the above object, the Association shall have power:

to organize conferences, meetings, study groups and discussion groups;

to make representations in matters of Christian interest;

to publish books, periodicals, papers, pamphlets and articles; and

to publicize in any way the results of study and research undertaken in the promotion of its object.”.
